It is with regret the inhabitants of Longridge and surrounding district will learn that Pte. John Hamilton, A.S.C. (M.T.), died of enteric fever at Dar-es-Salaam, East Africa, on 19th February, 1918. John was a fine upstanding young man of 26 years, and a general favourite of all who made his acquaintance. Prior to enlisting he was employed by the late Mr Wood, baker, Whitburn, to whom he was a valued and trustworthy servant. He had also two other brothers with H.M. Forces, one of whom, Pte. Thomas Hamilton, was reported missing for some time, but it is now known he has been a prisoner in Germany since Nov., 1916. His younger brother, Willie, has been in France with the Royal Scots since July, 1916, and is also reported wounded. All three sons resided with their widowed mother, Mrs John Hamilton, to whom the sympathy of a large community is extended in her sad bereavement.
